Cetaceans of the East Pacific

Cetaceans of the East Pacific

Jordan Newman

Watercolor, Pen & Ink, Photoshop
Clockwise from top: common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus). These species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins), which are often seen off the Pacific coast of North America, are arranged with the most commonly sighted species in the foreground and the less frequently sighted species behind them. The painting was digitally edited to convey depth with blue atmospheric shading and to set the cetaceans against a bold background. The graphic inking style and abstract background were inspired by the works of comic book artist Tess Fowler.
