Carpet geraniums (Geranium incanum) control how their flowers mature in order to prevent self pollination. When these flowers first open up there are 10 stamens present and an unopened stigma. As the flower matures, the anthers produce pollen and eventually fall off, leaving behind empty filaments. Once all the anthers have fallen off, the stigma opens up and is ready to accept pollen.
