“I want to make science come alive for anyone who would otherwise see it as a tepid body of facts.”
— Marie Siegenthaler, statement of purpose, Science Illustration Program at CSUMB
Tentacles & Wings is a small nonprofit focused on art scholarships at both California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and College of Marin. This organization was formed to honor and support Marie Siegenthaler’s two great passions, science and art. Marie wanted to bring science alive through her illustrations. Her passion for drawing and science was rooted in a sense of wonder for the world. Tentacles & Wings seeks to help aspiring artists expand on their sense of wonder for the world, as well. Tentacles & Wings awarded scholarships to three students in the Science Illustration Program class of 2021. Here are their stories:
“The Tentacles & Wings scholarship had a practical benefit (I was able to purchase a large chunk of art supplies for fall quarter) but also a mental/emotional benefit because it made me realize…’This is really happening! I’m in the program and starting an incredibly exciting journey!’ It was humbling and made me want to honor Marie and her vision.”
“The Tentacles & Wings scholarship helped me purchase a digital drawing tablet and colored pencil set for my science illustration classes this year. These materials were necessary for my courses and I am truly grateful for the support. I was honored to be a part of upholding Marie’s legacy.”
“The support I received from this scholarship not only helped me pay for the materials that were required for classes, but also provided the encouragement I needed to do my very best work in the Science Illustration Program. Thank you, Tentacles & Wings!“
Please consider a donation to Tentacles & Wings to support next year’s incoming Science Illustration class.
On June 5, 2021 students took part in an hour long Q & A Discussion about their work and time at CSUMB. The discussion is below.
It would be impossible to overstate our gratitude to three people who have all had a hand in successfully launching our second virtual exhibit. We would like to thank Michael Zury, Programming and Logistical Specialist at CSUMB, who constructed the exhibit website, converted and uploaded hundreds of files, fielded endless questions and revisions, kept us abreast of new ideas and changes, brought his artistic sensibility to bear in making the website beautifully showcase the artwork, and basically pulled out all the stops to make this an exhibit to be proud of. We also want to thank Sophia Saw, Marketing specialist at CSUMB, who with unfailing calm and positivity, flawlessly planned and managed promotional outreach and social media posts. Finally, thanks to Andrea Dingeldein, Lecturer and Program Assistant in the Science Illustration Program, who outlined our initial exhibit plan, collected and organized all of the content, helped shape the look and workings of the site, designed the exhibit poster and e-fliers, interfaced constantly with the student-artists and everyone else, guided each of us in our own small contributory tasks, and so, so much more. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Michael, Sophia, and Andrea!! Your expertise, dedication, creativity, hard work and unwavering cheerfulness made this endeavor a success and a joy.
We would also like to extend our warm regards and thanks to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, both for hosting the physical incarnation of Illustrating Nature for the past ten years, and for helping spread the word about this year’s virtual exhibit. We look forward to working with you all again, in person, when conditions permit!
Thanks to the Arts Council for Monterey County for their continued support, and for providing a grant to help promote Illustrating Nature 2021.
